In a surprise gesture Mitt Romney formally ends his bid for the Republican nomination. After being routed by Senator John McCain on Super Duper Tuesday and falling behind Erica Huckabee in delegates Romney said he "must leave for the good of our party." There had been speculation that Romney would begin campaigning again after receiving a fair amount of delegates. Romney had informally dropped-out of the race due to a football injury, deciding not to participate in campaigning, but never formally resigned his bid for the nomination. Also, Mitt Romney had decided not to debate nor campaign for the UC Davis non-delegate election which is being held today. Instead, he silently garnered votes in the National primaries without campaigning. The gesture today comes as a formal resignation of his bid and a formal bow to the non-delegate election devised by California Secretary of State Drew Halfmann. With Romney's formal departure the Republican Party, including Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who has dropped-out of the primaries, but is still campaigning due to the prospects f how a win in Soc 118 may reinvigorate the national bid. However, John McCain, Erica Huckabee, and decisive underdog Ron Paul will be relieved that Romney will not circumstancially absorb any of the non-delegate Soc 118 votes.

Today's The Day...
By: Jamie Puccetti
Today in SOC 118, students will decide who their vote is going to. There will be a winner in the Democratic Party, Republican Party, TV News Media, and Paper News Media.
Over the past 5 weeks, students have really taken their role seriously and I am quite impressed with how well each group has done. I think every student has really put a great amount of effort into their group to make it a success.
I wanted to acknowledge the candidates. They stepped up to the plate and have conquered their roles. No matter who wins the SOC 118 Campaign 2008, the New York Times wants to be the first to congratulate everyone for a job well done.
Stay tuned for voting results!!!

Results from Super Tuesday
By: Jamie Puccetti
Hillary Clinton proved yesterday that she is a force not to be reckoned with. With strong support from Latino women and elderly people, Hillary captured California along with Arizona, Arkansas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
Barack Obama took home Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, and Utah. The results of New Mexico are still out but Obama is in the lead by 1%.
On the Republican side, John McCain dominated in the polls. He won Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Oklahoma leaving Mitt Romney to win in Alaska, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Utah.
Mike Huckabee did far better than expected and surprisingly won Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
The next major contests include Maryland and Virginia, and then Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania, followed by what could be a slow and grueling crawl to the convention.

It Begins... Romney wins Wyoming / Huckabee wins West Virginia
Two states have reported 100% of the precincts: Wyoming and West Virginia. How might this affect Californians waiting to head to the polls after work? Mitt Romney is still fighting, as a dropout, and so is Erica Huckabee. No results as of yet for the Democratic race. We will remain close to the Associated Press releases so that we cna deliver the breaking news!

In realted news...today is California's primary. It's been said that Hillary Clinton has the lead but that her lead has dropped to single digits. Rumor has it that McCain is going to take California. Check back to see those results as well!

Super Bowl / Super Duper Tuesday

Today is the pigskin meltdown some folks love to enjoy with others; some scoff at the fact that football, and all of it's patriarchal, testosterone-fueled, misogynistic, glorification of abusive capitalism, egocentrism, has a spotlight in American culture. But, as the New England Patriots, who are favored to win, take the field against the New York Giants, an incredible underdog, there should be questions as to why the East coast has not only teams competing for the National Championship, but has candidates bidding in the their respective parties for the Presidential nomination. I mean we've got Hilary Clinton who is like the Patriots, a vet of the game who flourishes in the spotlight, and Mitt Romney from "New England," Massachusetts, who is instead of being the top dog is incredibly unfavored to win his party's nomination, especially since he dropped out with a, coincidental, football injury, trick knee back spasm. As geography is reversed the candidates are still representative of the teams competing today, and it may not seem likely as of now, but after Tuesday we could have a rematch of New York and "New England" in another type of National Championship. It's just an insight I thought I should share before the pita chips and guacamole weigh to heavily on my better judgment.
There are other teams that have their own massive foam "#1" fingers... The Texas Pauls, The Arkansas Huckabees, The Arizona McCains, and The Illinois Obamas (The New York Guilianis/The North Carolina Edwards). Exclusive jerseys available through Suburban Infitters.com (not a real advertisement)

Hillary's Mad At Us
Last Wednesday, my editor, Miranda Faber wrote an article about our in class Hillary Clinton. I believe it was beautifully written and very G-rated. Before the article was written Miranda struggled with how the Hillary camp would take it; if they would get mad or take it as part of the campaign process. I encouraged Miranda to write the article because it was NEWS and that is our job; to report the NEWS.
Apparently the article offended the Hillary camp and while that was not the intentions of this news organization, I stand behind my editor in everything she said. Hillary has fumbled on her words in press conferences, she has bashed other news organizations, and she has been missing on several occasions. And for the record, all information that was obtained was from a viable source and it was while Hillary was playing her “role.”
I encourage the Hillary camp to contact us for an interview to clear the air. I am sure Hillary has some things to say and we are more than willing to sit down and hash things out. If she chooses not to then that will be unfortunate but it will not stop us from doing our jobs as a news organization; it will not hinder us from writing the truth.
Here at the New York Times, we take our “role” very seriously but we also remember it is indeed just that…a “role.”
